Formed in 1981 by Gibby Haynes and Paul Leary in San Antonio, Butthole Surfers have gone through numerous personnel changes, although the core line-up has remained since '83. Of note was the addition of Teresa Nervosa as second drummer. Famous for chaotic and psychotic live shows in the '80s, they combined dark comedy with a wide array of electronic sounds and tape manipulation.
They have enjoyed limited success since the '96 release, "Electriclarryland," which contained the hit single "Pepper," shooting to #1. They signed with Capitol Records in '93 for works such as "Independent Worm Saloon," followed by the moderate hit, "Who Was in My Room Last Night?" The band announced late in '09 that they were unsure as to continuing.
