The concept of U2 and the band itself was formed before the members of the group had much of a grasp on their instruments. In what has become a signature of the band, they realized early on that playing music is more of a platform to convey a message to an audience than it is a display of great talent.
Although they did become exceptional musically, they clung to the idea that they could use their music to spread a message. Over the years, they have donated heavily to an array of charitable groups through benefit concerts and campaigns, using their fame to highlight organizations that try to improve the world.
U2 became popular fairly quickly, but it was nearly a decade after forming that the band went global with their album, The Joshua Tree. U2 gained their fan-base through their performances, but this release earned them the commercial success that was previously amiss. The Joshua Tree has become one of the biggest selling albums ever with over twenty-five million copies sold.
The rest is history. U2 has released twelve albums, won over twenty Grammys, and played to over three million people. They have been named one of the most influential bands of all time.
U2 is currently touring the globe on their 360 Degrees Tour. When they toured in 2009, they played to sold out audiences in nearly every city. Loyal fans camped out near the arenas in hopes for an up-close experience at the front of the crowd.
