On tour in Paris, Kanye West and his Watch the Throne collaborator Jay-Z were starting one of their most popular songs, Flashing Lights, when a persistent fan/annoying concert-goer was called out in classic show-stopping (literally) Kanye fashion:
Of course there are two sides to this but I think I’m going to surprise myself here and side with Kanye on this one. Who brings a laser pointer to a show? If I saw a guy pointing a laser at a show, he deserves a slap on the back of the head. Is that really how you get your enjoyment from a show? Pay big bucks to see a star performer and you decide to get some chuckles from a laser pointer? What do you think?
On the other hand, we all know Mr. West is well-known for having the occasional outburst:
- In 2009 he interrupted the MTV Video Music Awards when he stormed onstage as country singer Taylor Swift accepted the award for best female video. West thought Beyonce deserved the award.
- In November he canceled his performance on the “Today” show in New York after presenter Matt Lauer upset him during the interview leading up to his slot.
- A couple of months earlier he’d appeared at the UK’s Big Chill Festival, where he likened himself to Hitler.
I love to say that all this is pretty amusing, but not really what you’d expect from a professional.
On the other hand, some might argue that it’s part of Kanye’s appeal as a superstar.
