Bringing home the gold

The Canucks are on a hot streak this Olympic season. Repeatedly crushing the competition, the Canadians have finished with a nine-plus goal lead over Slovakia, Switzerland, and Sweden. They set a new Olympic record against Slovakia with a score of eighteen goals, breaking their former record set in 2006 of sixteen goals.

In the semi-final match tonight, Canada takes on Finland, ranked number three in the world. This is the third straight Olympic semi-final match-up between the two countries.

The Finns will look to goalie, Noora Raty, to defend against high-scoring Canadian forward, Meghan Agosta. Raty was named top goalie in back to back world championships in 2007 and 2008. She is considered the key player for Finland, but critics claim she won’t be enough to shut out the Canadian powerhouse.

The Canadians are the clear favourite in tonight’s game, and are expected to meet the U.S.A. in the gold-medal competition on Thursday. With a 3-0 record and nine points, Canada has secured first place in Group A. The Americans lead Group B with the same record. The likely match-up between these two countries is considered the one to watch.
