Canada vs. Russia Olympic Hockey

Crosy sets the pace

After winning 8-2 against Germany on Tuesday, Canada continues their quest for gold, taking on Russia today in the quarterfinals. If successful, Canada will move on to the Gold medal final. If not, it’s the end of the road for the home team. No doubt, there will be a sea of red and white at Canada Hockey Place to support the Canadian boys.
It’s obvious this is a huge game for Team Canada, but it comes with a little more depth than usual. There is an infamous rivalry between young NHL stars Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin. Drafted into the NHL in the same year, these highly praised forwards have been competing for time in the limelight, collecting a number of awards, including the Art Ross Trophy, the Hart Memorial Trophy, and the Lester B. Pearson Award. They are hands down the two best players in the NHL. Both Crosby and Ovechkin have proved time and time again that they are able to play well under pressure, and are the consistent high scorers in the league.

The differences between these two elites lie in the way they carry themselves on the ice. Crosby is an obvious leader and play maker, who has even been compared to the great Wayne Gretzky. He is consistent, reliable, and often reserved on the ice, well at least compared to Ovechkin.
Ovechkin is an amazing player who has no problem putting on a show. He is fast and physical. He perpetually throws out big hits and bigger goals, followed by larger than life celebrations. He is a crowd pleaser, with a love for the game that is clear on the ice, and for the fans it’s contagious. It’s easy to see why these two boys are fan favourites.
