’94 Vancouver Canucks Reminisce

mcleanvancouvercanucksIt seems appropriate that as the Vancouver Canucks make their run for the Stanley Cup – they haven’t gotten this far since 1994 – that those same 1994 teammates are getting together for a trip down memory lane.

The team that made it to the 1994 Stanley Cup Final will be having a reunion tomorrow at the River Rock Casino in Richmond. From 2 pm to 5 pm the ’94 Canucks will be in the lobby area signing autographs and reminiscing about their own run for the cup. This is a free all ages event that includes prizes and photographs.

You’ll have the chance to meet Kirk McLean, Murray Craven, Dana Murzyn, Jeff Brown, Marty Gelinas and Gerald Diduck!

The current Vancouver Canucks play in Game 4 of the Western Conference Final against the San Jose Sharks today at 12 pm PDT in San Jose.

Whitecaps Tie Toronto FC 1-1

vancouverwhitecapsIt’s been quite the contrast for the Vancouver Whitecaps. Wednesday’s game against the Toronto FC at Empire Field saw a 1-1 draw, a tough pill to swallow when in their first MLS game they beat the TFC 4-2.
Though the Caps gave it a good go on Wednesday night, the issue seems to be the lack of scoring. After being revved up for the second half, they ended up with a post strike, a header that missed, a 20-yard drive that went off the crossbar, and a shot that went high from eight yards away.
Close, but no cigar.
It seems to be unfortunate for the Whitecaps that they’ve only won 2 of their 14 games played so far, drawing half of those.
Despite that they still managed to draw a crowd of 15,500 for 20,000 seats. That’s great for the Caps, especially when Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals were at Rogers Arena the same night.
One thing the Caps will have going for them is a weekend off, while Toronto is set to play Colorado before next week’s game.
Cheer on your home team! The next game for the Whitecaps is Wednesday, May 25th at 5 pm PDT at BMO Field in Toronto against the Toronto FC. Next home game is Saturday, May 28th at 2:30 pm PDT at Empire Field in Vancouver. Don’t miss out, get your tickets.

One Step Closer to a Winnipeg Jets Return

I almost screamed when I heard the news: the Winnipeg Jets are just about home!!
winnipegjetsThe Globe and Mail was reporting last night that a deal had been signed to move the Atlanta Thrashers up to Winnipeg. And while that news might have jumped the gun a little bit with nobody yet confirming the move, that hasn’t stopped Winnipegers cheering anyway (myself included). Dedicated Jets fans gathered at the windiest intersection in Canada – Portage and Main – last night to celebrate the news.
This will be the first time the city has seen an NHL franchise since the Jets left for Phoenix in 1996.
With this news comes the rumours that if the Jets return to Winnipeg, they might not be called the Jets at all. True North Sports and Entertainment, the ones behind the move and the owners of MTS Centre where the “possible” Jets would be playing, are said to have already come up with new possible monikers for the team. Rumours even include the regional portion changing to Manitoba rather than Winnipeg to gain more provincial support. This disappoints many Jets fans, since with the name comes a great history stretching back to the WHA.
According to The Globe and Mail, an announcement will be made Tuesday regarding the Jets return. In the meantime fans will continue to wait with baited breath to see if their team returns home.

New Music Alert: I’m From Barcelona – “Always Spring”

Spring has sprung fully at the ShowTimetickets.com HQ in Vancouver, and summer is just around the corner–the sun’s out, the birds are chirping, and it’s not pitch-black at 9 AM anymore. Hopefully there’ll still be some ice left for the Canucks to win the playoffs on.

With that, we thought we’d bring you one of the first really fantastic songs of summer. There’s just something about catchy, upbeat pop released between May and August which makes us incredibly excited for the beach. Here’s the brand-new track “Always Spring” from Swedish indie pop group I’m From Barcelona (you might remember their unimaginatively-titled but incredibly catchy track “We’re From Barcelona” from a few years ago). It’s got a great hook, a wonderful little piano line, and is so crammed full of saxes, glockenspiels, and handclaps that you can’t help but dance in your seat a little when listening. Pop this on your iPod and start thinking about what snacks you’ll bring to the beach this weekend.
