Taylor Swift, Still on Top

On the heels of multiple Grammy wins, American country music artist, Taylor Swift has received some harsh criticism for her recent Grammy performance with rock legend, Stevie Nicks. After watching the performance myself, I must say it wasn’t her best. That being said, I still think the naysayers have it all wrong. I think she genuinely deserves her place in the spotlight.
There is a reason she has seen staggering success. Swift is a very talented songwriter, who appeals to people across the board.  She doesn’t cover heavy subject matter. Instead, she writes autobiographically inspired lyrics that are youthful and relatable. Beyond her megastar status, she seems like a regular person, and communicates that to her supporters.
It is that connection that has brought in a new listenership to country music. Swift is young, and has generated a young female audience for a genre that was otherwise lacking in that demographic. As a country music artist, she has reached a wide-ranging fan-base.
Taylor has moved beyond country charts to see pop success. She is not the first to straddle the line between country and pop, but is arguably the most successful. She has had two singles go to number one on the pop charts. Her 2008 release, Fearless, spent eleven weeks at the top of the Billboard 200, and has just been awarded the Grammy for “Album of the Year.”
Swift has also received much praise from her “first love”, the country music industry. In 2009, she swept the country music awards winning “Video of the Year,” “Album of the Year,” “Female Vocalist of the Year,” and “Entertainer of the Year.” She also became the youngest recipient of the American Music Award for “Artist of the Year.”
