NHL releases 2013-2014 schedule, confirms participation in 2014 Olympics

Buy 2013-2014 NHL ticketsAfter a week of waiting and false alarms, the National Hockey schedule for the 2013-2014 season was finally released today. The new season is set to begin October 1st, 2013 and features six outdoor stadium games on the schedule. The NHL also officially confirmed the participation of its players in the 2014 Sochi Olympics, which leads to a two-week break in the February schedule.

Tampa Bay Lightning at Boston Bruins Game 5 Recap

Game 5 was a kick in the chest for the Tampa Bay Lightning, as the Boston Bruins took the game 3-1. This game was all about the Bolts too, because they kept drilling the puck at Boston’s net. The unstoppable Tim Thomas got in their way yet again, preventing them from taking the series lead.
At home for Boston at TD Garden, the first period kicked off with an immediate goal for Tampa Bay. Just over a minute in the Bolts got one on a two against one break away, when Steven Stamkos and Simon Gagne took on the B’s Johnny Boychuck. Gagne landed it in the net. This set the tone for the first period as Tampa Bay kept drilling it in Boston’s side. Tampa even had a brilliant power play opportunity, but they couldn’t the puck past Thomas. On his A-game, the Bruins’ goalie managed to prevent the next 33 shots on net and denying the Bolts any further goals.
Second period saw the Bruins striking back. Nathan Horton put the game tying goal in the net, and Brad Marchland put them in the lead.
Tampa Bay came back with a vengeance in the third period despite the “We want the Cup” chant by Boston fans. Blair Jones nearly tied it up for Tampa, when a beautiful shot ended up hitting the goal post. In the last few minutes of the game when the Bolts had pulled their goalie, Boston finished the game off with a goal on the open net.
Final score was 3-1 for Boston, putting them in the lead of the Eastern Conference Final with 3-2.
Tickets are still available for the next game Wednesday, May 25th, 8 pm EDT at Tampa’s St Pete Times Forum. Tampa’s going to have to fight back harder if they want to prevent Boston from taking the series.

Nothing Beats Seeing the Vancouver Canucks Live

canucksWith the Vancouver Canucks in the Western Conference finals – the first time since their 1994 attempt – hometown pride has been overflowing as we cheer them on. I don’t think there’s anything that compares to the feeling that goes through you as you watch a game unfold. It’s a unique experience.
My fellow blogger Max and I were talking this morning and we wondered… what would you call that feeling?
Max: I’ve been watching the games on TV, along with everyone in my neighbourhood. Every time the Canucks score, you can hear a blast of air horns and cheering echo throughout downtown. It’s a good feeling, being connected to your town like that. It reminds me a bit of the Olympics. My friends and I were clustered around our television, watching the game, and after Canada pulled off that last-minute goal, we went into the street and were suddenly surrounded by the crowd. The cheering, the crying, the excitement—it was like what I’d felt while watching that game, times a million.
Andrea: Whenever I think of watching a game at home I think of having the dickens scared out of me. Game day is an event – family over, snack food on the coffee table, CBC up on the TV. Why should I be scared? Even though I know it’s coming, my Dad likes to yell “SHOOT”. It makes me jump out of my seat in surprise every time, but it’s part of the experience. It’s as though he thinks saying this to the TV will make the Canucks play better.
We came to the agreement though, that as fun as it is to watch the Canucks on TV, there’s something altogether different about actually being there.
Max: The last time I went to a game was years ago, with my parents. I remember the smell of the ice, the Zamboni, the deafening cheers from the crowd. It was amazing. I don’t think I’ll ever forget it. So with the combination of hockey tickets going for so cheap and the Canucks doing so well in the playoffs, I’m going to check out a game in person for the first time in a while.
Andrea: Seeing the game in Rogers Arena is a different experience all together. That camaraderie from home is multiplied. There’s a thrum that goes through you when you and 20,000 other fans rise to sing the national anthem. This is hometown Vancouver at its finest. It’s magic. You and the people next to you become friends as you cheer the Sedins down the ice, as you watch Luongo make the save. Watching at home is fun, but watching in the arena is exhilarating.
If you’ve never seen a playoff game live, now would be the time to grab tickets and go. There are some amazing deals to be had for every fan who wants to see the Vancouver Canucks live in action.
The next game against the San Jose Sharks is Friday, May 20th at 6 pm in San Jose. The next home game will be Tuesday, May 24th at Rogers Arena (though only if it’s needed!).

Kovalchuck Contract Going to Arbitration

The NHL Players’ Association (NHLPA) has filed a grievance today on behalf of Ilya Kovalchuk in response to the NHL’s controversial decision to reject what would have been the longest contract in NHL history, consisting of a 17-year, $102 million dollar deal with the New Jersey Devils.

The NHL rejected the contract on the grounds that it “deliberately circumvented” the league’s salary cap by being too front loaded. In the agreement, Kovalchuk would receive just under 80 percent ($80 million) in the first 7 years, and 93 percent in the first 10 years.

The 27 year old Russian would be 44 years old when the deal expires in 2027. The controversial portion of the agreement comes in his final 5 years of the deal that would have him being paid the league minimum of $550,000 in an attempt to free up more room for the Devil’s under the salary cap.

Fans are gearing up for the 2010 Winter Games Hockey events held at Vancouver’s GM Place, known as Canada Hockey Place during the Olympics. Not only is ice hockey one of the most popular Winter Games events, but it is also Canada’s national sport. Team Canada has won the most medals in both men’s and women’s hockey, but nevsidney crosbyer an Olympic gold on Canadian soil.

Needless to say, it is an exciting time for Team Canada. Sidney Crosby, from Halifax, Nova Scotia, is considered the star player competing for Canada. Although this will be his first Olympic competition, the twenty-two year old has an impressive NHL resume. He began skating at the age of three. Crosby grew up playing hockey, and was drafted into the NHL in 2005 by the Pittsburgh, Penguins. He was named the Most Valuable Player in 2007. In 2009, he became the youngest NHL captain to win the Stanley Cup.

The Canadians will not walk away with the gold medal easily. Tough competitors include the teams from Russia and Sweden. Alexander Ovechkin, forward for the Washington Capitols, is regarded as one of the best players of the NHL. He has won multiple awards, and was named MVP for 2009. He is consistently one of the highest scoring in the league. Ovechkin will be competing in his second Olympic Games.

Double trouble is coming from Sweden in the form of Henrik and Daniel Sedin. With their help, Sweden took home the gold medal in the 2006 Olympics over Finland. Oddly, the twin brothers are NHL players for the Vancouver Canucks.
