Cirque du Soleil's "Amaluna" blends feminist-themed Tempest with circus

Cirque du Soleil is world-renowned for its dazzling combination of circus acrobatics, theatrical storytelling and unmatched production value in costumes and live music. What began as a small touring troupe is now one of Canada’s most recognizable and successful entertainment exports, with shows in over 40 countries.
Cirque’s latest North American production Amaluna is currently performing under their trademark blue-and-yellow tent at Vancouver’s Concord Pacific Place. The show is inspired by the Shakespearean tale The Tempest, following a group of men washed ashore upon a mysterious island populated by goddesses. A princess of the island eventually falls in love with one of the men and the show’s acts follow the trials of the ensuing romance.
The show has garnered rave reviews (see: The Straight and Vancouver Sun) from the press praising the show’s plot, cast, and of course, the circus stunts and acts that have made Cirque so famous. Highlights – if one can pick one out of the many – include women traipsing on tight-wires in high heels, aerial scenes with actors careening over the audience’s heads, and a steamy, borderline-PG waterbowl contortionist act.
Amaluna is on an extended run at Vancouver’s Concord Pacific Place until January 20th, 2013, and is slated to perform in Calgary and Edmonton in the spring. Order your Cirque du Soleil tickets today and experience an unforgettable show like no other!

Cirque du Soleil Dralion to Wow Abbotsford

Cirque to Soleil is set to descend on the City of Abbotsford with a show that blends the beauty of both Eastern and Western acrobatics: Dralion.
cirquedusoleildralionThe show is a fusion of the best of both worlds as seen in its name, derived from the blend of “Dragon” which symbolizes the East and “Lion” for the west. It focuses on the Eastern philosophy of harmony between humans and nature, and representations of the elements become the main characters: Azala for air, Gaya for earth, Oceane for water, and Yao for fire.
Set to a variety of world music, the show includes elements such as the bamboo poles, aerial hoop, hoop diving, and more.
Originally a show under Cirque du Soleil’s Grand Chapiteau, it’s now been adapted for arena performances. Dralion will be at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre for seven shows June 2nd-5th, 2011.
