The Tragically Hip begin tour next week

The Hip are back at it again, hitting the road to promote their newest release, We Are the Same, beginning on April 27 in their home province of Ontario. They are scheduled to play 56 shows over a five month period across North America, even playing several locations multiple times to give their fans the opportunity to catch the show. The Tragically Hip tickets have already gone on sale for all of the scheduled dates, up to the final show in Hamilton, Ontario on October 2, and so far ticket sales have been strong — in one instance, the band has added a sixth show to the Massey Hall in Toronto after the original five sold out.

Gord Downie, lead singer for The Tragically Hip, will no doubt put on a great show for fans as he leads the band through their sometimes improvisational onstage performances. I have heard word-of-mouth reviews that speak highly of Downie’s “flamboyant” style of dance that sees him hopping and skipping across the stage. Whether you’re a fan of his dancing or not, Gord Downie and the rest of his multi-award winning band are set to entertain and show their fans why their newest released album is their eigth release to debut at #1 on Canada’s charts!

U2 360° Tour tickets now available, breaking sales records

After having released their twelfth studio album, No Line on the Horizon, in February of this year, U2 will be embarking on a World Tour beginning on June 30, 2009 as they travel Europe for six months on the first leg of the U2 360° Tour, then continue on with the North American leg on September 12th. Tickets for the previously pre-sale only shows have just gone on sale and have already begun to break sales records; as of mid-April the tour has already surpassed 2.5 million tickets sold. Individual venues continued to set records as the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles sold-out at 90,000 tickets, becoming the fastest selling and largest attended concert to play at that location in history!

Tour stops across North America continued the trend of outstanding sales, with the stop at Vancouver’s BC Place reaching a staggering 57,000 tickets sold, on par with the shows in Washington and Boston. Close to half of the shows on this World Tour have already sold out, with the other locations not far behind. The tour will begin on June 30th in Barcelona, where the band will continue to travel Europe for the next two and a half months before crossing the pond and landing in Chicago to kick off the North American portion of the tour on September 12th. From there they will travel west for the next month and a half hitting up all the major cities across the continent. Be sure to check the listings below for the show nearest you!

The Secret Life of a Rock Snob

The time has come to finally reveal my secret…I’m a closet Rap and R&B fan. Every summer it slowly starts to seep out of me, but I usually keep it hidden away on my iPod or only listen to it when I am home alone and am sure the neighbors have gone out. The reason I am finally able to admit to it publicly was brought on by the announcement of Snoop Dogg’s West Fest with guests Warren G, Tha Dogg Pound, Westurn Union, Warzone, Mistah FAB.

I brought it up casually to a friend the other day who is a huge indie rock fan. I expected to be berated for even mentioning it…but to my utter astonishment and delight – she screamed in excitement! I ran to my bedroom and dug out the Warren G CD I keep hidden in a box under my bed, alongside a few other CD’s I’m not yet prepared to admit to. We sung (rapped I suppose is the correct term) to the CD and laughed hysterically at the fact that we both new every line and had never once admitted it to each other.

The most ridiculous part of it all is that this is a friend that knows everything about me. A friend I tell my dreams and crazy schemes too, who knows all the highs and lows from my past, yet doesn’t know that below my bed lies a box of CD’s I’m too ashamed to put out on the shelf.

Based solely on the fact that I judge people based on their musical tastes, I have never let on to my guilty pleasures, unless I feel I have a case to defend them to my fellow rock snobs. I can get away with artists like Elton John (usually singing a line or two from Tiny Dancer does the trick), or Phil Collins (the man is an amazing drummer and no one can deny that In the Air Tonight gives them chills), but when it comes to popular modern music I can’t find any viable defence.

So it is with that that I declare, I can sing along to 90% of whatever is on the Top 40 Charts at any given time and I am no longer hiding my Warren G CD in a box under my bed (there will, however, still remain a few secrets left in that box…but I will now have to find a new hiding spot for it).

Join me, Snoop Dogg, Warren G et al, June 19th at the Commodore Ballroom. General Admission tickets on sale Thursday, May 29th at 4:20PM (rolls-eyes) for $45+service fees.
