Rochette to Compete Despite Tragedy

Canadian figure skater, Joannie Rochette, will be competing today despite her sudden family tragedy. Rochette received the news early Sunday morning that her mother, who had only arrived in Vancouver a day earlier, had passed away Joannie Rochetteof heart failure.
Rochette is the greatest chance for Canada, who has not seen the women’s podium in over twenty years. Rochette has received much support, as condolences from her home in Montreal have flooded in. Her teammates have called her “courageous,” as Rochette places her focus toward her Olympic goal, and continues to compete.
Rochette is a six-time national champion. She is scheduled to compete at Pacific Coliseum tonight.
