Lion King on Tour

The Lion King
The Lion King

The Lion King made its debut at Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver this week, and will continue with daily performances through August 8. The show will hit several U.S. cities in the fall.
Lion King the musical is based on the Disney movie of the same name. It debuted at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis  in 1997, and was an instant sensation. The following year, Lion King was awarded six Tony awards, including Best Musical. This one-of-a-kind production has reached an audience of over forty million people.
The unique quality of the Lion King has kept the musical on Broadway for more than ten years. What makes this stage show exceptional is its ability to dynamically involve the audience throughout each performance. Along with the fantastic masks and puppets, the production mechanics are visible at all times. The actors aren’t disguised behind the masks. It’s up to the viewer to merge the two, and create the characters as a whole.
Director Julie Taymor says, “When the human spirit visibly animates an object, we experience a special, almost life-giving connection. We become engaged by both the method of storytelling as well as the story itself.”
