On Sunday, the 98th Grey Cup will be played between two of the CFL’s biggest powerhouses. The Montreal Alouettes (12-6) will take on the Saskatchewan Roughriders (10-8). The game kicks off at 6pm ET at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton.
The Alouettes, led by their quarterback and three time CFL Most Outstanding Player,  Anthony Calvillo, have maintained a dominating presence in the CFL. They have appeared in eight Grey Cups over the past 11 years. Meanwhile, the Roughriders are often referred to as “Canada’s Team,” because of their diehard fans that seem to be spread all across Canada.
Last year’s unforgettable Grey Cup was contested by these same two teams. Spectators were left talking about it for weeks.
It came down to the final play of the game. The Roughriders were leading 27-25, and the Alouettes kicker, Damon Duval, had just missed a 43-yard field goal attempt with no time remaining. The Roughriders and their fans went crazy… That is before they realized the Roughriders had just received a penalty for having too many players on the field, allowing Duval to try the kick again. On his second try, Duval made the kick, giving the Alouettes a 28 to 27 win over the Roughriders. To everyone watching, it felt like the Championship had just been wrenched from the Roughriders arms, and it pretty much had.
The Riders were left shocked and in disbelief on the field, but those left most heartbroken were the dedicated Roughriders fans, who have seen the team win only 3 Grey Cups of 17 appearances in the franchise’s 100 year history.
Can the Saskatchewan Roughriders avenge the heartbreaking loss of last year, or will last year’s Grey Cup Champions, the Montreal Alouettes, be able to extend their streak to 2?
