2015-2016 NHL regular season schedule released

The NHL’s regular season schedule was released today, with the 2015/2016 campaign opening on October 7th, 2015 and concluding on April 9th, 2016.

The Vancouver Canucks will open their season with a pair of games against the Calgary Flames, first at Scotiabank Saddledome on October 7th and then at Rogers Arena on October 10th.  Notable games include:

  • October 10 – Home opener vs CGY
  • October 27 vs MTL
  • November 4 vs PIT
  • November 21 vs CHI
  • February 13 vs TOR
  • April 9 vs EDM

Game on! 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs begin today

It took 1200-odd games and the last day of the NHL regular season to set the playoff match-ups, making this year’s playoffs as intriguing as ever. With the exception of long-suffering Edmonton and Toronto markets, Canadian hockey fans across the country have special reason to be excited. With five teams in the playoffs and at least two guaranteed to make it through to the second round, the odds are favorable for a deep run from either the Canadiens, Canucks, Flames, Jets or Senators. Adding to this year’s intrigue, two past playoff heavyweights in the Los Angeles Kings and Boston Bruins will be sitting out this postseason.

Canucks release 2014-2015 schedule – open season Oct. 8th in Calgary

After a season to forget, the Vancouver Canucks are ready to hit the reset button for 2014-2015. The team has a new look in its front office and behind the bench, with Trevor Linden and Jim Benning taking over as President of Hockey Operations and General Manager, respectively. Gone are head coach John Tortorella and assistant Mike Sullivan, as Willie Desjardins was formally introduced as the Canucks’ new bench boss earlier this week.

The National Hockey League released its 2014-2015 schedule on Sunday. The regular season begins on October 8th, featuring the Los Angeles Kings unfurling their 2014 championship banner in their home opener versus their California rivals the San Jose Sharks (who incidentally nearly ended the Kings’ 2014 playoff run in their 1st round series). The Vancouver Canucks will also open their season that day with a road date against the Calgary Flames.

The Canucks home opener will feature the Edmonton Oilers in town on Saturday, October 11th. Some notable Rogers Arena dates include:

  • Saturday, October 18 vs Tampa Bay
  • Thursday, October 26 vs Montreal
  • Sunday, November 23 vs Chicago

    Kings and Rangers set to face off in 2014 Stanley Cup Final

    Out of the fire of two tightly-contested Game 7s, the Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers are set to begin the Stanley Cup Final at the Staples Center on Wednesday. One year removed from their championship run in 2012, Kings secured their Finals berth with a thrilling 5-4 overtime win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday night. After three straight seven-game series, one has to wonder if the Kings will have anything left in the tank against a speedy Rangers squad that has been idling since their 1-0 Game 7 victory over the Canadiens last Thursday. The Kings will likely lean on their depth and championship experience to their advantage, as well as having home ice advantage.

    2013-2014 NHL Regular Season begins with new debate over fighting in hockey

    Game on – the National Hockey League’s 2013/2014 regular season got officially underway yesterday with three games on the opening night schedule. The beginning of a new season should always be an exciting time for hockey fans, with this year being especially unique with the newly-aligned divisions that created new rivalries going forward this year. Questions of how players perform on new teams, or which teams rise and fall from their previous performances get answered over an 82-game schedule.

    However, last night’s game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens featured an ugly injury that reignited the recent debate about fighting in the NHL. Partway through the third period, heavyweight enforcers George Parros and Colton Orr squared off for the second time in the game. As both players wrestled with each other’s jerseys, Parros lost his balance and was knocked unconscious with a hard fall on his chin. Parros was later stretchered off the ice and diagnosed with a concussion.

    There is a general consensus among surveyed players today that fighting is still a integral part of hockey. However, it has sparked a fresh debate from media writers who are questioning whether fighting should be eliminated from the game. The latest questions stem from the possibility that the NHL could be held liable for the long-term effects of head injuries suffered from fighting – a debate gaining momentum following concussion-related lawsuits and settlements from the National Football League.

    Vancouver Canucks vets to report to training camp September 11, tickets on sale this Saturday

    It’s back to school and back to the rink, folks:

  • In a press release today, the Vancouver Canucks announced that veteran players will officially report to training camp on Wednesday, September 11. At that time, players will be made available to the media and undergo physical testing. A total of 36 players will be reporting to camp, which includes prospects invited from the Young Stars Tournament that is currently underway.
  • The Canucks also announced that free on-ice scrimmage sessions will be open to the public from September 13-15 at Rogers Arena. Fans can register and view the training camp schedule via the Vancouver Canucks website.
  • Around the NHL, single-game tickets will go on official onsales to the public on Saturday, September 7 at noon local time. You can already buy tickets for the Vancouver Canucks, Toronto Maple Leafs and all 30 NHL teams through ShowTimeTickets.com.
