UFC 149 tickets went on presale Thursday and Friday this week (and were quickly snapped up), and it’s anticipated that the general release set for Saturday, May 5th will also sell out quickly. It’s one of the hottest tickets in Canada this summer, and oddsmakers have weighed in on the title match between defending champion Jose Aldo and challenger Erik Koch. The Brazilian is the heavy favorite to defend his featherweight title at -385 odds. However, Koch is an impressive 13-1 in his career, so it remains to be seen whether he can pull off the upset in Calgary.

For one of the hottest events in Canada this year, UFC 149 Calgary sure knows how to make headlines even before the first ticket is officially sold.
UFC 149 tickets don’t go on sale til late next week and the official lineup hasn’t been finalized yet, but the fight card for UFC 149 in Calgary got another shakeup this week when it was announced that current light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones would not face challenger Dan Henderson at UFC 149, despite UFC President Dana White penning the bout for Calgary a few weeks ago. In place of the Jones/Henderson bout will instead be the original headline fight between featherweight champ Jose Aldo and Erik Koch.

84th Academy Awards to celebrate – and amuse

In a year where Academy Award nominations and box office success seem inversely related, producers for the 84th Academy Awards are trying to drum up ratings with a lineup of notable comedians to spice up the evening. Billy Crystal returns as MC this year, and he’ll be joined by the likes of Will Farrell, Tina Fey, Chris Rock and the cast of “Bridesmaids” among others. What lacked in the box office and excitement department producers appear to be trying to fill with a sheer number of presenters and entertainment value. With attendance at the theaters at an all-time low, the Academy Awards are probably at the bottom of everyone’s minds. Fortunately, show producers and Mike Myers have taken it upon themselves to give us a brush-up course on how to treat Oscar properly:
With few blockbusters nominated for awards, it’ll be interesting to see how this year’s Oscars will pan out. Producers feel it’s best to laugh off a tough year in Hollywood. And of course we’ll be wondering whether The Dictator – aka Sacha Baron Cohen – will show up in light of his snub the show’s executives (look it up on YouTube if you dare). If this all sounds like a circus waiting to unfold, you likely wouldn’t be too far off the mark: Cirque du Soleil is slated to make an exclusive performance live at the awards show.

Harlem Globetrotters keep whistlin' on
While Jeremy Lin may be the talk of basketball nowadays, he still has a long way to go before matching the longevity of the Harlem Globetrotters. The modern incarnation of the Globetrotters have been dribbling and dazzling crowds to the tune of Sweet Georgia Brown since 1929, and in 2012 they are still going strong with North American shows scheduled well into April. While the NBA may have the lion’s share of hype in the basketball world, the longevity and cultural impact of the Globetrotters is something to behold.
At the time of their inception in the 1920s, the Globetrotters were a social and cultural game-breaker in the pre-Civil Rights era in the United States. In a period where blacks were commonly referred to as second-class citizens, the athleticism and undeniable skills of the Globetrotters transcended norms and forced a change in attitudes regarding black athletes. Basketball today is a global sport with athletes and fans of all colors and creeds. While ‘Linsanity’ is the latest phenom in the sport, perhaps some of the credit for his emergence – and that of retired player Yao Ming – can be traced back to the days when the Harlem Globetrotters burst onto the court.

Charlie Sheen Live: My Violent Torpedo of Truth
Charlie Sheen has added twelve new cities to his “Live: My Violent Torpedo of Truth/Defeat is Not an Option tour.” The one-man show will kick off in Detroit on April 2nd, and wrap up in Vancouver on May 2nd.
Little has been released regarding the details of the show, but that hasn’t stopped fans from buying up tickets. The event has sold out in New York, Chicago, and Detroit.
