Mumford & Sons set to rock Holland Park

So far, so good. If the press they’ve been getting following their two kickoff concerts is any indications, celebrated folk-rockers Mumford & Sons are ready for the big venues of their North American tour.

Mumford & Sons began their sold-out tour this week in Alberta with shows in Calgary and Edmonton, and did not disappoint the crowds. Reviews by the Calgary Herald and Edmonton Journal praised the band’s energetic, yet unflashy performance. Say what you will about the resurgence of folk-rock bands in recent years, but Mumford & Sons are living up to the hype and love that the press and fans have been showering them with.

Their next stop – Friday night at Surrey’s Holland Park – is their biggest venue yet with 25,000 concert-goers expected to show up in front of the outdoor stage. Friday’s weather forecast appears to be holding up, and the stage is now up. It’s the biggest outdoor concert the city has seen since Lollapalooza in Cloverdale in ’94, but organizers say they are ready for any security or crowd-control issues.

Tickets sold out at the box office within 15 minutes of the original onsale, but you can still buy your Mumford & Sons tickets with ShowTimeTickets.com – We Are Never Sold Out!

Madonna shows it off on her latest MDNA tour

By Clinton

Madonna performs in Rome

Madonna was one of the first queens of controversy in the music industry, and a few weeks into her latest world tour, she has been up to her old tricks. ShowTimeTickets.com has tickets to all of Madonna’s MDNA tour dates, and if her first few shows are any indication, fans are in for quite the show. At 53 years old you gotta give her credit for staying in shape. I suppose we should be thankful for that, given Madge’s propensity to show off select bits of her body during these past few weeks: Read More

Clinton reviews Jack White in concert

By Clinton

The Jack White concert in Vancouver was – in a word – awesome! Jack alternates his backing bands between the all-female group The Peacocks and all-male set Los Buzzardos. We got the girls tonight, and they absolutely rocked the house. Jack played off the cuff, with no pre-determined set list, and it was cool to see the band take his cues seamlessly. There was great anticipation for this show and he delivered in full, playing selections from his new and old catalog.

I managed to take a few snapshots of Jack in his sharp baby-blue suit, alongside The Peacocks:

This was definitely the best concert I’ve been to  a long time, and ranks among my top music experiences ever. If you get a chance to see him on tour in the future or were on the fence about getting his new album, I wholeheartedly suggest you check it out!

Jack White is just one of many sweet concerts that’ll be hitting up Vancouver and cities near you this summer; what concerts are on your list this year? Be sure to check with us if you need tickets to any event!

Coldplay in Vancouver

Coldplay Vancouver 2012

Saturday night in Vancouver can yield more than one entertainer and event to choose from, my last Saturday was won by the talented musicians from Coldplay.  Working in the entertainment industry I have come to realize there are two types of shows, a big budget experience show and an entertainer-focused, no-gimmick show. I usually lean towards a smaller more intimate experience show that has quality sound, seating and atmosphere with a performer that is there to entertain. But it seems to me that big budget shows with little door gifts and flashing hypnotic lights tend to bring in an immense audience.

Why is this? Are people more entertained by a big budget concert experience than they are with quality vocals and on-stage presents? Read More

Colin James’ Performance Last Night in Vancouver

colin

What: Colin James
Where: Orpheum Theater
When: January 13, 2009
Status: Sold Out
Rating: 4 out of 5

I’ve seen Colin enough times during my young life, at least 6 times including special appearances, showcases, and freebies, to know what to expect, just straight honest old-school organic blues rock. I was, however, surprised that he threw some curve balls into the set list, covers from Bob Dylan and Van Morrison and a small tribute to Stevie Ray. Rarely does he inject so many covers into a set list. I guess when you’re Colin you can make anything work, including Green Day’s Boulevard of Broken Dreams.

Currently he’s on an ambitious cross Canada tour. He made Vancouver feel welcome by making fun of the city, and reminiscing on home town memories. He kept the chatter to a bare minimum so that more tunes fit into the two hour evening. Colin threw in some b-sides and songs off the new album, Rooftops & Satellites, which although not as good as his previous works in comparison, still rocked the house.

No one goes to a Colin James concert to see a theatrical spectacle, however, it’s the music that is the marvel. Colin has always been the vehicle that drives the emotion and the feeling of the genre. He’s been one of my favorite performers/guitarists along with Slash, Zakk Wylde, and Jimmy Page since I was 10.

The back up band consisted of 2/3rd’s “The Odds” and a mini horn section, which added dimension to some of the songs, especially with the earlier commercial rocker singles. There was a point in the show when Colin strapped on an acoustic guitar and performed a mediocre song off his new album. It was odd to see him play four basic chords on an acoustic for an entire song. Colin himself looked uncomfortable like a child heading to their first day of school.

This was the first time I actually sat down at a Colin James concert. I was literally intimidated to stand up and dance ’cause everyone else in the audience looked angry and bored. Most didn’t even bob their heads to the rocking tunes. The audience was very casual and rock friendly. It surprised me that for most of the show, everyone sat down.

The opener was rock star INXS contestant Suzie McNeil. Although I missed most of her set, what I did catch was soulful and decent.
