San Francisco Ballet Company is the first professional ballet company to be founded in the U.S. Under the current direction of Helgi Tomasson, it stands as one of the world's leading ballet organizations, in residence at the War Memorial Opera House of San Francisco.
In 1940, the company performed the first complete "Swan Lake" produced by Americans. In 1942, the company split into two independent companies, with the ballet on one side and the ballet school on the other. The 75th Anniversary Tour events in 2008 included the Harris Theater of Chicago, the Orange County Performing Arts Center of Costa Mesa, the City Center of New York and the Washintgon, D.C. Kennedy Performing Arts Center. 2011 events in September and October will be performed in Costa Mesa.
