The books, originally written by Norman Bridwell, debuted in 1963 and helped establish Scholastic Books as one of America's leading publishing companies. The story line began when a young girl, named Emily Elizabeth, chose the runt of a litter as her birthday present. Her love for the puppy, named Clifford, caused him to grow to over 25 feet tall. Unable to stay in the city, Emily Elizabeth and her family moved to the remote Birdwell Island. This is where their adventures unfold.
