In 1968, the hit song "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" solidified the popularity of Iron Butterfly, a psychedelic rock group with its roots in San Diego, California. Their debut album, Heavy, was released earlier that same year and went Gold, but it was the success of their 17 minute long hit that made the second album containing it reach 4x Platinum. Truly, this band was the recipient of the music industry's very first Platinum Album after it sold more than eight million copies within the first year of its release. Along with a series of EPs, bootlegs and released singles, the Butterflies produced no less than thirteen studio albums.
Even as recently as 2010, the Iron Butterflies were receiving accolades for their work in the form of the Lifetime Achievement Award during the 20th Annual San Diego Music Awards. They continue to tour both in the US and internationally playing a mixture of classics and new material.
