Okkervil River is an indie band from Austin, Texas, formed
in 1998. The band was named after a short story by Russian author,
Tatyana Tolstaya, Leo Tolstoy's great grandniece, and after a real
river outside of St. Petersburg.
Over the course of two weekends in the summer of 1999, Okkervil
River recorded their debut seven-song self-released record called
Stars Too Small to Use. On the strength of this album,
Okkervil River was admitted into the 2000 SXSW music festival.
They have since played at the festival many times. Okkervil
River's latest album releases are Black Sheep Boy and its
follow-up album Black Sheep Boy Appendix. Both albums debuted
in 2005 but were re-released in summer 2006 after Okkervil
River was signed to Virgin/EMI in Europe.
