An alternative rock group from the late '80s in Buffalo, Mercury Rev's early experimental psychedelic sound gave way to a more melodic style. Co-founder Donahue (vocals) also joined Flaming Lips and appeared on two of their albums. They were only able to develop a cult following.
Mercury Rev's album of '95, "See You On the Other Side," made them unexpected pop stars, and the '98 release of Deserter's Songs was named NME Album of the Year. They followed with "All Is Dream" ('02), "The Secret Migration" ('05) and a compilation album in '06, "The Essential Mercury Rev: Stillness Breathes." In '08, they released "Snowflake Midnight" and a free MP3 of instrumentals, Strange Attractor."
