Born Gloria Fowles in New Jersey, 1949, the American disco singer had several hits, most notably "I Will Survive" in 1979, preceded by "Let Me Know (I Have a Right) in '04 and followed by "I Am What I Am" in '83. She started with the Soul Satisfiers in the '60s, with a first solo single "She'll Be Sorry. Let Me Go Baby" in '65.
Gaynor entered acting in '90 with "The Wayan Bros.," "That '70s Show" and "Ally McBeal." In '02, she released her first album in fifteen years, "I Wish You Love." In '05, she and her music were inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame. She appeared in Ecuador in 2010, singing her greatest hits.
