The concert was organized by Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp, spurred on by Bob Dylan's comments at Live Aid earlier in that year. Today, Farm Aid is an organization that emphasizes the importance of family farms and puts on an annual concert with a variety of stars.

Farm Aid's board of directors includes Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Neil Young and Dave Matthews. Neil Young's sermons about the environment are a highlight of the annual shows. The 2005 concert marked the 20th anniversary of Farm Aid.

The 2006 Farm Aid will take place on September 30 at the Tweeter Center in Camden, New Jersey. It will feature acts including Neil Young, Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp and Dave Matthews.
